Testing

Two tests need to happen in order to confirm the predictions made in the analysis such as the temperature of the outside, the temperature are different locations, and the amount of time to fill the enclosure with argon. To measure the temperature of the outside surface a thermocouple will be used. To measure the time to fill the inner enclosure with argon a candle will be used to measure the lack of oxygen in the system. These tests are used to meet all safety requirements of the system such as surface temp so that someone doesn’t get burned when touching the enclosure and making sure someone does not inhale high doses of argon. A third test will measure the success of the JCATI device, the percentage of resin removal will be measured through weighing.

Time to Fill Oven with Argon

A tealight candle was used to measure the lack of oxygen in the system. Once the candle goes out it indicates when the enclosure is filled with argon. The first test yielded an average fill time of 28 minutes. The calculated time was 13 minutes thus repairs needed to be made. After repairs, the retest was done and showed that the average was 5:47 minutes.  The reason why the fill time was lower was that the candle was placed 3 inches from the top of the enclosure. When calculated it would have taken the candle 8 minutes to go out at that height.

Surface Temperture Test

To measure the surface temperature a thermocouple was used and ice was used to calibrate the precision. After 2 hours of heating the oven and constantly reading 500c measurements were taken. Calculated results showed that the surface temperature will be 49 C. After testing the average panel showed to be 75C. This is because gaps between the insulation and the enclosures allowed heat to directly expose the surface.

Percentage of Resin Removed

Carbon fiber shreds were weight before and after they enter the oven. Calculated results show that 99% of resin removal would be achieved after 30 minutes in a 500c oven. After the shreds wherein the oven for 30 minutes, only 27% of the resin was removed. The reason for this large difference is the constants that were used in calculations came from outside sources and not ones specifically to wing trimmings.
